Summer of the Shark Girl

Kekarot

Hilton Head Island reported its second shark attack of the 2025 season on Sunday. Similar to Tuesday’s attack, which involved a 12-year-old girl, the yet-to-be-identified beachgoer from Sunday’s attack also received a non-life-threatening bite to the leg. According to officials, both victims were treated at area hospitals.

The two attacks in Hilton Head come just days after Leah Lendel, a 9-year-old girl, was attacked by a shark while snorkeling with her family off the coast of Boca Grande, Florida. “This is a disturbing trend,” said one official who wishes to remain anonymous. “Shark attacks involving children are rare, and there have been two within a week of each other.”

DRAMATIC REENACTMENT

I reached out to Dr. Lisa Hoopes, Senior Director of Research at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, for a comment on the recent attacks but have not received a reply from her office. I was able to speak with Brad from the food court, though. When I asked his opinion on the attacks, he told me, “Sir, if you’re not going to order something, you’ll need to step out of line, or I’m calling security.”

As shark attacks continue to raise concerns along the coast, local officials are urging beachgoers to exercise caution and stay informed about safety guidelines.
